*Clutter is a term borrowed from radar, referring to numerous, unwanted, close-in reflections following the trailing edge of the transmitted pulse. Clutter obscures the echoes coming from nearby targets, and is due to local scattering in the immediate vicinity of the transmitter and receiver.
