THE HOLY SPIRIT

As we have followed this study through it is obvious that the Holy Spirit is the key to God's equipping for us as Saints. We should therefore look closely at the person of the Holy Spirit and His work among us.

As we read Acts, we discover that the Holy Spirit played an indispensable role in the birth of the Church (Acts 2::1-41), and in fact throughout the whole record of Acts. And He still plays an indispensable part in the lives of believers today. As Christians it is important for us to know who the Holy Spirit really is and what He does.

The important things to understand about the Holy Spirit are:

  1. The Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4, 2 Corinthians 3:17)
  2. The Spirit is the promise of Jesus to us (John 16:7, Acts 2:38-39, John 14:16-26, John 15:26)
  3. The Spirit in-dwells us (John 14:17, 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16)
  4. The Spirit testifies to our relationship with God (Romans 8:16, Galatians 4:6, 1 John 3:24, 4:13)
  5. The Spirit is our guarantee of God's promises to us (Ephesians 1:13-14, 1 John 3:19-20)
  6. The Holy Spirit teaches us about God and His will for us (John 14:26, 1 Corinthians 2:10, Hebrews 4:13, 1 John 3:20)
  7. The Spirit guides us (Romans 8:14)
  8. The Spirit helps us live a life pleasing to God (Galatians 5:16) through the manifestation of the Fruit of the Spirit within us (Galatians 5:22-23)
  9. The Holy Spirit helps us in our prayer life (Romans 8:26)
  10. The Spirit gives us power to witness (Acts 1:8)
  11. The Spirit gives us life (Romans 8:11)
This is the work which the Holy Spirit does in the believer, but He is also actively working through us in the world. The work of the Spirit in the world is to:

  1. Convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16:8)
  2. To act as a restraint on the things of the world (2 Thessalonians 2:7)
  3. To confirm the truth of the Gospel by His power (1 Corinthians 2:4, 1 Thessalonians 1:5)
  4. To bring glory to Jesus (John 15:26, John 16:14)
