*The ancient pharaohs, in stocking their tombs with provisions
for the next life, required a number of funerary boats for their transport.
Of these, two were "solar" boats--one for journeying in the path of the
Sun God, Re, from east to west by day, and the second for the long night
journey through the underworld from west to east. Five such boat pits have
been discovered around Cheops' pyramid--two with contents intact; five
have been discovered around Chephren's pyramid, all empty; and none have
been found in the area surrounding Mycerinus' pyramid, which is still surrounded
with much rubble.
