Jesus, The Light of the World

The Night Sky

In ancient times, before street lights, motor vehicles, flashlights, lanterns, blazing torches, and the like, the night sky was a blazing splendor! A father could take his kids outside the family tent to lie on the grass while legends of the sky were transmitted father to son, from one generation to the next. Information was transmitted orally!

Behind all that which was visible were the gods, the angelic host of heaven, and the very throne room of God. Visible was the Milky Way, the moon, the planets, comments and meteors! Enthralling! Awesome! Weighty!

My best friend in high school, Don Childers, was an astronomy buff, a SciFi enthusiast like me, a fine cartoonist and illustrator. Together we drove North from San Diego one weekend to see the gigantic 200 inch telescope being built on Mt. Palomar. I also had a chance as a boy to see Mt. Wilson in Pasadena, The Lick Observatory at San Jose, and the Griffith Observatory with its Planetarium and giant Tesla coil--were also shrines I loved to visit!

Of course I have since been blown away by the Hubble Space Telescope and it successor, the new James Webb Telescope.

The last time I saw the night sky undimmed by city lights was in 1986. My colleague Tom Yetter and I from SRI hosted three visiting engineers from the Japanese firm Komatsu. One place they most wanted to visit was Yosemite. The trails, waterfalls, and meadows, overwhelmed them--they took many pictures. But what blew me away was the light sky! Thirty-four years ago seems like yesterday.

Lodestar is another name for Polaris, the Pole Star. An imaginary line drawn from earth's South Pole, through the North pole and far into space takes one to the dim star Polaris. Polaris is about 430 light-years away, magnitude -3.6.

The earth's projected axis rotates around Polaris once every 25,772 years. Early navigators steered their sailing ships by measuring the angle between the pole star and their present horizon with a sextant. A Nautical Almanac gave them their Latitude. Knowledge of currents and prevailing winds helped them guess their Longitude. It was, at best a tricky business. Magnetic compasses helped. (These brief words about Navigation only hit the high spots.)

Fast forward: World War Two brought Loran A and C using a world wide network of low frequency radio transmitters. One could tune into to two Loran stations on a receiver and find one's position by triangulation. Radar zoomed in on us in World War Two. Today automated beacons and transponders track everything that flies. My iPhone knows right where I am at every moment in time, and will allow my friends to track me if I so choose. (Migrating birds and butterflies have their own proprietary beacons).

When I was a boy we had to visit a local library to read their copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica, to view the latest issue of Scientific America and to see if there were any good books on their science shelves. Our telephones allowed us to call a few friends, through an operator and switchboards of course...

Postcards cost a penny to mail, first class mail was 3 cents, air mail, 6. A dollar an hour was the standard wage.

The Internet--the World-Wide-Web changed everything. Much of the sum total of the world's information bank was soon put online and usually became accessible to everyone. Google's key word search engines are utterly amazing. They weren't even there until the late 1990's.

This article is really about information not available except by revelation from a source outside our space-time domain. The great body of revealed truth is of course, sorta online also, mostly. Two decades is a drop in the bucket of recorded history. The end of the age is here!

‘At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. But you, Daniel, keep the words secret and the book sealed until the time of the end. Many shall be running back and forth, and evil shall increase.’ (Daniel 12:1-4)

Revelation from God

"All the Good Times are Past and Gone."

What is Light?

On the first Day of creation week, having brought into existence space, time and matter, the second creative act of God was the creation of light.

Light was spoken into existence by the Second Person of the godhead, Jesus, the Logos or Word of God,

"And God said, 'Let there be light' and there was light."

The statement "Let there be light" "Let there be energy of all wavelengths and in all forms." I believe it was from these four working substances created on Day One: (1) space, (2) time, (3) matter and (4) energy out of which God constructed (and filled) the universe we live in. In His work as Creator, the Son of God was the "master craftsman" of Proverbs 8. The activity of creation week involved many separate actions by all the Persons of the godhead, as can be seen by the numerous action verbs in Genesis Chapter One which refer to God.

The Bible says that "God is Light" and this is not the same as saying "Light is God." If we claimed that the Light shining forth on day One of creation week was simply God Himself we would have major problems--because God is a Spirit and He does not directly emit protons or waves! Such an hypothesis as saying that the Light of Day One came from God Himself puts us on the fast road to pantheism which we must refute. The God of the Bible is separate from, and transcends, His creation. Created light, photons, is not the same as spiritual light which characterizes God Himself.

I am the light of the world.
He who follows me will not walk in darkness
but will have the light of life." --Jesus

Because God is Light, a more profound problem appears when we consider other passages in the Bible which speak figuratively of light, and of spiritual light. Writing to Timothy Paul the Apostle tells that God, "alone has immortality, [and that He] dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see." (1 Timothy 6:16).

Moses, who enjoyed a very intimate relationship with God, on one occasion asked God that He might see Him as he was,

And Moses said, "Please, show me Your glory."

Then God said, "I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion."

But God said, "You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live." And the LORD said, "Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen." (Exodus 33:18-23)

The whole point about God being Light is that the splendor and radiance of His immediate presence is so intense it must be veiled in clouds of thick darkness. Otherwise mere mortals would be burned to a crisp if they came into the unveiled presence of His effulgent power. The world we live in is very dark spiritually. We are like the blind leading the blind. God intends society to be governed by enlightened men who know God, obey Him, and reflect His character.

Spiritual realities are more permanent and more substantial that the shadows they cast into our physical world. Jesus is liked to the rising Day Star and called by Malachi the "Sun of Righteousness"--symbols which suggest to us that His true splendor is greater than that of any star or any known source of light and power in our physical world. Revelation describes the face of Jesus as shining like the sun in full strength (1:16).

Light is a common symbol in the Bible for truth as opposed to ignorance and error. "Enlightenment" means true understanding and comprehension in the inner man. It was Jesus who declared, to the consternation if his enemies, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." (John 8:12). So in some way there is a connection in scripture between spiritual light and life itself! The New Testament furthermore insists that the man Christ Jesus is the exact visible expression of God the invisible. It is by knowing Jesus that we who once were "sons of darkness" become "sons of light." Unlike Moses we are invited to look full into the face of Jesus: "...we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, all this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:18).

God, were his Light unveiled, would fill and flood the entire universe with His presence to such a degree that there could be no ordinary night time anywhere. Therefore the spiritual world where He dwells, surrounding us on all sides, a world in which the material creation is embedded, is not only more solid than our world, it is also brighter--it is full of light in fact. Living as we do at present in a world still relatively dark, we await the coming of the Dawn. In New Jerusalem "the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign for ever and ever." (Revelation 22:5)

The Holographic Universe (Chuck Missler)

>

Early in the morning Jesus came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them, they said to him, ‘Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?’ They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, ‘Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.’ And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus straightened up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ She said, ‘No one, sir.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.’

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’

Then the Pharisees said to him, ‘You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not valid.’ Jesus answered, ‘Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid because I know where I have come from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; I judge no one. Yet even if I do judge, my judgement is valid; for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. In your law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is valid. I testify on my own behalf, and the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf.’ Then they said to him, ‘Where is your Father?’ Jesus answered, ‘You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.’ He spoke these words while he was teaching in the treasury of the temple, but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. (John 8:1-20)

“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, |
‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass:
“I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first.
“Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess,
to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.
“And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.
“Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.
“I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts.
And I will give to each one of you according to your works.
“Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine,
who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden.  “But hold fast what you have till I come.
“And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations—
 ‘He shall rule them with a rod of iron;
They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’—
as I also have received from My Father;
“and I will give him the morning star.
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

Sign in the Stars

The days of week, the months, and most of the stars are named after pagan gods or myths.
This is to be expected in the absence of outside information sent into a fallen creation by the Creator.

Demons and fallen angels are real, not imaginary! Astrology is but one false religious system for explaining the hidden order in the universe.
